A talk with Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, David Sancious

The Promotion People DavidSanciousphotobyMichael BloomDavid Sancious just wrapped up a year that would have been enviable to even the biggest names in the music world. As a member of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band, David not only received the “Award for Musical Excellence,” but he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Peter Gabriel was inducted in 2014, as well, and David joined him on stage, too. Last year, Sancious also spent a good portion of his time traveling the world with Sting, Paul Simon, and Peter Gabriel. He came home for the holidays, had a brief break, and then hopped on a plane and went to New Zealand, Australia, and Europe with Sting and Paul Simon for the next leg of their “On Stage Together” tour, which started yesterday (Friday, January 30).

AXS talked with David shortly before he left for New Zealand. Hoping to hear how the musical juggernaut had enjoyed his brief time off, AXS was saddened to learn how the artist had actually spent his precious downtime.

“I had knee surgery,” Sancious related. “I had a real problem with my leg on the Peter Gabriel tour last summer, so I went through six months of physical therapy, which didn’t really help. I started out okay, but the longer the tour went on, the more painful it got, so I scheduled the surgery for January 6 and I’m just about finished recovering. It was important to get the surgery done before this next project with Sting and Paul Simon started up. Luckily, it fit in great! I’m just about fully healed, and I’m certainly ready to start the tour.”

A life on the road isn’t something that everyone can handle. The constant travel, irregular sleep, and not always the best food options are all very hard on the body. It takes a special person to thrive under these often adverse conditions. How does David manage?

“Every night is enjoyable!” he expressed. “That’s one of the things I love most about playing music. When I was little, my parents told me, ‘If you make your life’s work what you love to do, then it won’t really be such hard work, at all.’ Truth be told, this is incredibly hard work! But because I’m so in love with it and I find such enjoyment from the most simple things to the most complex things, my life has just been one long series of degrees of enjoyment.”

When David said his life, he meant his entire life. The artist knew by age seven that music was what he wanted to do.

“There are only two other things that I’ve ever lost myself in like I can lose myself in music — where hours go by and I don’t even realize it because I’m so enthralled. The first is painting. Abstract painting because I’m not a skilled or schooled painter, at all. Just doing oil on a canvas for my own pleasure, that same kind of world comes up where I just totally fall away. That time-based person who has concerns and all of that, it just melts away and I’m left with only the sensation of what I’m doing.

“The other activity that I have lost myself in is gardening,” David informed. “But music definitely trumps everything.”

Sancious went on to state that doing music is at once soothing and fascinating. He compared it to being on a river in that creativity has a pull and a force all it’s own, and you sort of just ride along, excited to see where it’s going to take you.

“I really do think that music and art have an energy that has its own life,” David elaborated. “It sort of comes through us and we become the instrument. It is just like when we use a musical instrument in our own hands, we become the physical, three dimensional instrument for that music to come into the world. It is such a fascinating process, you’ll be sitting there and you’ll be thinking, ‘I’m thirsty, I’d love to get up and get some water.’ But you won’t! That will wait for 20 minutes or more because you are too immersed in what you’re doing. You can even put off going to the bathroom,” he laughed, “because you just have to see where this moment is going to take you!”

David thought for a moment, then decided, “You know, they should teach this in schools. It ought to be something that goes along with career counseling. And it is something that should be done early on to get people in touch with whatever it is in life that their particular personality resonates with. What their interest is. Where their energy is. Find that thing that you get lost in and don’t ever lose touch with it!”

Besides his non-stop touring schedule, this year David promised AXS he would finally complete his ninth studio album, The Treehouse Sessions. “That’s my first priority,” he stated. “Everything else takes second priority to that. My touring will probably take me to the summer of this year. Then, I’ll have a little break before going back out with just Sting — I think we’ll be in Europe for about six weeks in late June… so my apologies for the delay on the record, but it will certainly come. Just like the sunrise, on one fine day, it will be there,” he laughed.

And on that day, AXS will be there to tell you all about it. For more information, visit David’s website and follow him on Twitter.

Young Actor William Ainscough continues to receive nominations for his starring role as Billy in CityTV’s ‘Seed’ at the Joey Awards in the Young Actor age 9 or younger in a TV series Comedy Action Leading Role category.  The Joey Awards will be held in New Westminster BC on November 16thwww.joeyawards.com

The Joey Awards have been established to recognize young performers in Canada through awards, and educate their parents on keeping their young performers safe in the crazy world of Showbiz.” The Joey Awards goal is to reward young actors and actresses in Canada for their hard work and dedication to their craft.

William has received other award nominations for ‘Seed’ including a 2014 Leo Award nomination for best performance in a Comedy, Variety or Musical www.leoawards.com and his 2013 Actor nomination for the ‘BEST NEWCOMER’ category for the UBCP/ACTRA Awards (www.ubcp.com).  ‘Seed’ stars a talented ensemble cast headed by Adam Korson (2 Broke Girls).

It was clear after booking his first two auditions that acting for William was a path well chosen. William’s very first attempt at acting was a success, when he landed his first audition in an open casting call for the feature film Hidden’. William was successful in landing the role of Joey, a slightly shy and soulful boy and close friend and neighbor of Zoe’s (Emily Alyn Lind). The feature film, which follows a family hiding in a bomb shelter after a mysterious outbreak devastates civilization, stars Alexander Skarsgard (True Blood, Battleship) and Andrea Riseborough (Oblivion, Never Let Me Go). Nicole inspired him to try acting for himself and began taking classes.  William has had the chance to act opposite his mother in several episodes of ‘Seed’, when she plays Billy’s teacher and principal, Mrs. Anderson.

The Lost Legion Feature FilmIndustryWorks is pleased to announce at this year’s AFM the US distribution deal for ‘The Lost Legion’ with Grindstone Entertainment.  Lionsgate Home Entertainment will release the film across its media platforms in 2015. The feature film will be the catalyst that launches ‘The Lost Legion’ TV series slated for 2015 from Executive Producers, Evan Tylor, John Curtis and Lloyd Simandl.

“We’re very excited to launch this movie with Grindstone Entertainment and we look forward to continuing to deliver high end TV content into the marketplace.,” says Evan Tylor, CEO IndustryWorks Studios.

IndustryWorks Studios is fresh off their newest production, the terror-driven, theatrical film ‘WRECKER’ starring Anna Hutchison (Cabin in the Woods).  IndustryWorks Studio also brought us the now infamous and New York Times touted feature film ‘American Mary’ distributed by Universal Pictures, Anchor Bay and XLrator Media in 2013.

About ‘The Lost Legion’:
Sex, corruption, betrayal and the final death throws of a once powerful Empire.  Where enemies become allies, allies become pawns and one man’s struggle to survive is “the last chance for a new Rome”.

After the fall of the Rome, a once powerful Empire is now but a shadow of it’s self, deprived of its former glory and the Dark Ages are imminent.  Fortress towns are now small kingdoms where decadence and corruption thrive and the struggle to maintain control is quickly slipping away.  In one such remote outpost, one Legion remains and strives to bring Rome back to its former glory and the interwoven lives of the strong, the corrupt, the innocent and the power hungry will determine Rome’s final destiny.

About the Cast and Characters:
The feature film stars Michelle Lukes (‘Strike Back’, ‘Alexander’, ‘Doctors’) as the manipulative and shrewd Urbina Prima, the wife of Maximus the insane and glory seeking Roman Emperor played by Brian Caspe (‘Hellboy’, The Illusionist’, ‘The Last Knights’). Also starring is Tom McKay (‘Hatfields & McCoys’, ‘The White Queen’) as the ‘Legions’ hero Taranis and Jim High (‘The Muskateers’, ‘Borgia’, Crossing Lines’) as Argos, the middleman who plays all sides of this chessboard.

This stellar cast comes with a long list of Emmy, Golden Globe and People Choice nominated credits and awards on both feature films and television.

“We have the utmost confidence that Grindstone along with the marketing machine of Lionsgate that ‘The Lost Legion’ will be given the perfect reveal into the US market. We’re looking forward to seeing it all come together.”  Adds Caterina Scrivano, VP Sales & Marketing, IndustryWorks Studios.

“In the tradition of “Game of Thrones”, we look forward to bringing IndustryWorks’s new feature film, “The Lost Legion” to the U.S. audience.  Evan, John, and Lloyd have created a fresh and quite provocative vision of the politics of the Roman Empire”.  – Stan Wertlieb-Grindstone Entertainment Group-Head of Acquisitions.

Roham Rahmanian And His Company, The Astronauts Guild, Developing One Of The First Stereoscopic 180 And 360 Degree Camera Systems To Capture First-Person, Live-Action Virtual Reality Experiences

The Promotion People - AstronautsGuildLogoThe Astronauts Guild’s Roham Rahmanian, producer, director and a feature and commercial Digital Imaging Technician in the International Cinematographers Guild, announced today that he and his partners at The Astronauts Guild have begun test trials on 180 and 360-degree camera systems to capture first-person virtual reality experiences.  The Astronauts Guild partners are Roham Rahmanian, Founder | Supervising Producer, Scott Connolly – Founder | Head of Production, and Ian Spohr – Founder | Creative Director.  Tests and previews will be available online at www.theastronautsguild.com in October of 2014.

The rush is on for content providers for the new technologies, and CGI content has already made a splash in gaming and for early-adopters and developers.  However, the live-action content is much more technically challenging to create.

The Astronauts Guild succeeded as stereoscopic producers by staying lean & mean, and adapting current equipment and technology.  Those experiences gave them the insight to develop 180 and 360-degree camera systems for shooting first person, live-action virtual reality experiences.

“The virtual-reality revolution is upon us, and The Astronauts Guild wants to be on the forefront of creating quality, live-action content for entertainment, and possibly more importantly, for medical applications.  When 3D became the rave a few years ago, it took off with a Wild West, every man for himself explosion.  No standardization and no quality control.  This created a lot of content that was just plain bad, Because of this trend, many consumers had bad experiences” said RahThe Promotion People - Roham Rahmanianmanian.

“I hope, the early content creators for Oculus Rift and Sony Morpheus, including The Astronauts Guild, can come to a consensus early on, about quality control and mathematically calculated standards for content, it is of the utmost importance that the consumer feels comfortable trying out virtual reality, and is excited to make it a part of their daily entertainment experience,” added Rahmanian.

The Astronauts Guild is a collective of dreamers, doers, artists and technicians. A group of talent which is equal parts Production Company, creative collective and technical development firm. They take on projects in the entertainment industry which require an advanced knowledge of production and cutting edge technology to achieve a creative end.

In addition to developing 3D camera rigs, new live-action virtual reality shooting systems, producing and directing, Rahmanian is an always-in-demand Digital Imaging Technician. Rahmanian has worked with many world class brands such as:  BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, VW, Fiat, Dodge, Ford, Chevy, Coke Zero, Mountain Dew, Nintendo, Microsoft, Target, Walmart, Verizon, AT&T and many more.

The Promotion People - Roham RahmanianRahmanian was one of the stereoscopic producers on the “The Girl from Nagasaki” which was presented in the New Frontier Category at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival.  World-renowned photographer Michel Comte directed the stereoscopic feature film, a new interpretation of the classic Puccini Opera “Madame Butterfly”.

Additionally Roham and his partners have produced many advanced technology projects such as an art installations for the Soho House and the short film “Unbeleafable: A Girl Skateboards 3D Film,” created with the renowned skateboard director Ty Evans in partnership with the Levi’s Film workshop for the Museum of Contemporary Arts (MOCA) in Los Angeles and presented during their Art in the Streets Exhibition in 2013.

About Roham Rahmanian
Roham’s work has ranged from his first job as Assistant Props at the age of 16 to Fashion Photographer, Director of Photography, Digital Imaging Technician, Producer and finally Director. He has been involved in over 500 national/international spots since 2010.

Star and Screenwriter Sonja Bennett’s feature film “Preggoland” showcase her many talents at TIFF and VIFF with co-star Oscar nominee James Caan

The Promotion People - Sonja BennettEarly reviews are in. Critics love Sonja’s edgy comedy-drama

Preggoland is very much Sonja Bennett’s baby (pun intended!). The movie marks her foray into screenwriting; in addition to starring in the Canadian indie, the award-winning actress penned the script.  Opening to a much-hyped premiere at TIFF Canadian feature Preggoland will screen in Sonja’s hometown at the Vancouver International Film Festival.

Sonja realized there weren’t as many roles for women over 30, so she decided to be proactive about her career by writing herself the juicy lead she’d been craving.   “I was interested in exploring of how motherhood changes female friendships, the artifice of this giant clique of motherhood and the pregnancy pedestal,” Sonja shares.

The Promotion People - Sonja Bennett & James CaanThe early reviews are in and critics love the edgy comedy-drama written co-starring Oscar-nominee James Caan and veteran actor Danny Trejo.  Dorkshelf says “Preggoland has a stellar script and a star making performance from writer and lead Sonja Bennett.” Scene Creek billed the film “smart and savvy” while NOW Toronto said “Bennett’s written a sharp comedy that explores the societal pressure on women without children and gives a knockout performance as bad girl Ruth.”

Filmed in Vancouver, Preggoland centers on a boozing 35-year-old woman (Bennett) whose life turns upside down when is mistakenly thought to be pregnant. All of a sudden Ruth (whose life was more in tune with a teenager than a 30-something grown woman) earns her father’s approval, nabs the attention of her friends, and saves her job.  Ultimately she finds the glorious perks of pregnancy to seductive to ignore.

Laura Harris (24, Defying Gravity), Paul Campbell (Spun Out, Battlestar Galatica), Jared Keeso (Godzilla, Elysium, 19-2), and Lisa Durupt (Shall We Dance, Less Than Kind) round out the talented cast. The Trotsky’s Jacob Tierney directs with Kevin Eastwood and Dylan Collingwood as producers.

Preggoland premiered at TIFF as part of the prestigious Special Presentations programme. The buzzed-about film will have its hometown debut during VIFF.

Acting for more than 10 years, Sonja Bennett has appeared in critically acclaimed films such as Atom Egoyan’s Where the Truth Lies, Elegy starring Ben Kingsley and Penélope Cruz, and TIFF opening night film Young People Fucking – for which she earned a Vancouver Film Critics Circle award. The Vancouver native has kept an equally busy profile on the small screen with recurring roles in Eureka, Battlestar Galatica, Blade: The Series. Her performances in Random Acts of Romance, In No Particular Order, Cole and the TV series Godivas and Cold Squad garnered her Leo Gemini, and Genie nominations.

Preggoland is produced by Fake-a-baby Productions, Titlecard Pictures Inc. and Optic Nerve Films Inc. and with the support of Telefilm.

Canadian Corey Large Executive Producer On The November Man In Theatres Now and Revenge Of The Green Dragons Premiering At TIFF

The Promotion People - Corey LargeCorey acts and produces in BC film Poker Night premiering December 5, 2014

The year 2014 is proving to be busier than ever for Canadian actor/writer/producer Corey Large. As an executive producer, the B.C. native has a handful of blockbusters screening at prestigious film festivals and in theaters worldwide. Earlier this year “It Follows” premiered at Cannes and more recently, “Revenge of the Green Dragons” was accepted into the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival. “The November Man” opens this August and, later this year, “Poker Night” debuts in theatres across North America.

Starring Pierce Brosnan, “The November Man” is the first of Corey’s new slate of films to hit the big screen, debuting on August 27. Corey executive produces and Roger Donaldson (“The Bank Job”) directs. The spy thriller also stars Olga Kurylenko and Luke Bracey.

The film premieres at TIFF on Sept. 10 as part of the festival’s Special Presentations programme. This dizzying, decade-spanning crime saga from directors Andrew Lau and Andrew Loo follows two best friends as they rise through the ranks of New York’s Chinese underworld in the 1980s.

Corey not only produced, but also co-stars in “Poker Night,” a feature film shot in his hometown of Victoria, B.C., starring Beau Mirchoff, Ron Perlman, Giancarlo Esposito, and Titus Welliver. The thriller, which features twists and turns that will leave you guessing till the very end, opens in theaters nationwide on Dec. 5.

Two Provinces, Two Crews – HIGHWAY THRU HELL Expands for an Epic Third Season, September 2 on Discovery

Jamie Davis Heavy Rescue maintains operations in B.C., while expanding into Alberta to service the infamous highways through the oil patch

“The Coquihalla Experience” puts viewers in the driver’s seat for an interactive immersion at Discovery.ca

When it comes to wicked weather and wild wrecks, there’s only one other highway system that rivals B.C.’s Coquihalla. As HIGHWAY THRU HELL returns to Discovery for Season 3, premiering Tuesday, September 2 at 10 p.m. ET/PT, Jamie Davis Heavy Rescue moves into Alberta to tackle Highways 881 and 63, basing a second operation out of Lac La Biche – while maintaining Davis’ decade-old business in Hope, B.C. Two provinces, two teams, new crew, old rivals, more trust, more friction, and vastly different types of weather and crash conditions – this hellish third season of the original Canadian hit series from Vancouver’s Great Pacific TV is the most epic season yet!

Back with 13 new episodes, HIGHWAY THRU HELL travels some of the most economically vital – and most inhospitable – trucking routes in North America. Plagued by winter storms, truckers spin out and smash up, and heavy rescue teams hustle to clear the highway carnage and get the road open again. These highway heroes are a hit with viewers –Season 2 of HIGHWAY THRU HELL was #1 in its timeslot on Canadian entertainment specialty television among all key adult and male demos, and was the #3 Canadian entertainment specialty program among Adults 25-54 and 18-49 overall. The 2012 debut still ranks as the #1 series premiere in Discovery’s history*.

Changes and challenges mark every moment of Season 3. Last season, Jamie Davis Heavy Rescue lost a significant amount of business when a new competitor has scooped up half the recoveries, forcing Davis to seek new opportunities to off-set these restrictions. Gambling big, Davis rolls into northern Alberta’s booming oil patch to stake a new claim on another road worthy of the title “highway thru hell.”

Highway Thru Hell - The Promotion People

Highway 881 runs north 300 kilometers through remote forest, muskeg, and tundra between Lac La Biche and Fort McMurray. But it’s the only route into newly-discovered oil and gas fields, worth billions of dollars. On a route supplying more energy to the U.S. than Saudi Arabia, hundreds of millions of dollars of heavy equipment must be moved daily on this narrow, two-lane highway. Almost 60,000 shift workers are in camps serviced by Highway 881, and on shift-change day, thousands of workers need to get home. Davis sends his best drivers and trucks to the Alberta oil patch; he tasks Adam Gazzola to manage the new Alberta startup. His crew includes Colin McLean, a city driver fresh from Vancouver who has to earn Gazzola’s respect. Deep snow, bitter cold, and big recoveries that dwarf most loads in B.C. push Gazzola’s team to the limit.

Back in B.C., Davis faces more challenges. During the heaviest snowfall and worst avalanche conditions in decades, he’s left with a skeleton crew of new hires and old trucks in his battle to keep the Coquihalla Highway open. New drivers include Howie Irwin, a highly-skilled heavy recovery vet who used to work the Coq for Davis and his brother before buying his own truck and moving to the city; and Don Starr, a 20-year mountain veteran with MacGyver-like ingenuity. But Davis isn’t the only guy on the road. With Davis’ team stretched across two provinces, rival rescue operator Al Quiring steps into the void. For years, Davis and Quiring  have gone “tow to tow” for the title of “King of the Coq”. And like Davis has done with this stepson Brandon, Quiring is teaching the family trade to the next generation, his son Cary by his side. These young bucks have a lot to prove. Brandon is setting his sights on the Alberta operation, but must first show Davis that he has what it takes at home in B.C. Brandon attends a “wreckmaster heavy rescue bootcamp,” and this season Davis offers Brandon the chance to patrol in the quick response truck, aimed at securing accident scenes for heavy rescue… before the competition.

Highlights from the first episodes of HIGHWAY THRU HELL, Season 3, include:

HIGHWAY THRU HELL: “New Hell Old Hell”
Tuesday, September 2 at 10 p.m. ET/PT
A new winter season starts with Jamie Davis Heavy Rescue split in two… Adam Gazzola has taken half the fleet north to Alberta’s rich and dangerous oil fields while Jamie Davis stays back to fight and keep the Coq open all by himself.

HIGHWAY THRU HELL: “New Hope”
Tuesday, September 9 at 10 p.m. ET/PT
Jamie Davis realizes he can’t do it all alone in B.C. and hires a new driver. But the newest addition ends up needing rescuing himself after he crashes Bruce Hardy’s legendary blue truck. Davis’ stepson Brandon is forced to prove himself after his plans to join the Alberta team are put on hold.  And rookie operator, Colin McLean, learns just how tough his new boss Adam Gazzola can be… when a seemingly simple job goes sideways.

When “closure is not an option,” Davis’ teams struggle to make a go of it as the season continues. In Alberta, the crew must sleep in their trucks when they can’t find homes to rent, face the bitter cold of an Alberta winter, and endure the pain and heartache of leaving family behind. In B.C., 300 centimetres of snow falls in February, creating the worst avalanche conditions on the Coq in its 27-year history, which Davis must tackle with his newest crew and oldest trucks. At the end of the season, Davis faces the ultimate decision: should he throw all his resources into his new Alberta business, or rebuild his B.C. operations and wage a renewed battle on the Coq?

The HIGHWAY THRU HELL experience continues at Discovery.ca exclusive video, photo galleries, and show information – updated throughout the run of the series. Fans of HIGHWAY THRU HELL can delve even deeper with two rich interactive experiences that put viewers in the driver’s seat and feature the show’s silent stars: the highways themselves. Fully immersive and interactive, “The Coquihalla Experience” builds community and sparks conversation through “Explore the Coq / Coq Stories,” offering users an opportunity to drive the highway, explore the wrecks, and contribute their own stories about the Coquihalla. Also, armchair experts can test their skills in simulated challenges clearing difficult wrecks – and claim social bragging rights. Viewers can extend their experience on mobile via the Discovery App, and join the HIGHWAY THRU HELL conversation with the cast and crew during LIVE chats on Twitter (@HWYThruHell) during each Tuesday at 10 p.m. ET broadcast (hashtag #hwythruhell).
