Bauhaus To Pair With ‘My Shanti’ On January 16th For Special Indian-German Feast

On January 16th, diners at Vikram Vij’s South Surrey restaurant My Shanti, are in for a culinary treat! That evening, in a one-of-a-kind event, Chefs Vikram Vij and Stefan Hartmann from Gastown’s Bauhaus restaurant, will share a kitchen, and create dishes from each other’s home countries – India and Germany respectively.

This Bau-llywood pairing will see Vij returning to the European roots he set down in the 80’s – he lived and worked in Germany for a time, as well as being trained in Austria where German cuisine is the norm – and will mean Michelin-starred Chef Hartmann can revisit some of the Indian dishes he created for Berlin’s large Indian community before his move to Vancouver.

“I cannot wait to cook food with a German influence again,” says Vij. “I’m working on some great dishes, with some incredible and authentic ingredients, and I’m excited to hear what people think when they taste them.”

“It’s going to be a really wonderful experience – for Vikram and I, as well as the diners hopefully!” says Hartmann. “I’m a huge fan of Indian food, and when the idea of this culinary swap came about, I thought it would be a great chance to showcase a different style of cooking for both of us.”

The event will be ticket-only, and for $99, you will receive a four course dinner, complete with wine pairings from local wineries.

You can book by emailing: Namaste [at] myshanti.com with the subject line: “Bau-llywood”.

ABOUT BAUHAUS

Bauhaus Restaurant is Vancouver’s newest award-wining upscale dining experience, delivering innovative techniques, fresh flavours, and exceptional service. The a la carte menu reflects a contemporary approach to German classic cuisine, while the seasonal tasting menu showcases modern European fare.

Located in Gastown, the restaurant is housed inside one of Vancouver’s most unique historic buildings, The Boulder Hotel, which was originally built in 1890. Over the last 100 years, the building has gone through many changes, from its early days as a saloon, to a bank, and, finally, a hotel. Led by Vancouver designer Andrea Greenway, we have designed the restaurant to work within this historic space, featuring a dining room, a large lounge area, and an open-concept kitchen.

“I tried the six course tasting menu and it blew me away. Seriously.” – The Vancouverite

Renowned German Director Uwe Boll retires from film to focus on Vancouver’s Bauhaus Restaurant

His last project, Rampage: President Down, is set for release on US Netflix on December 12, 2016

rampagethree-192German Director Uwe Boll (Far Cry, Assault on Wall Street) announced his retirement after the completion of his Rampage trilogy, Rampage: President Down, a controversial political film about an enraged citizen in the US who goes on a rampage and kills the president. Rampage: President Down reunites Boll with Brendan Fletcher (The Revenant, Grace Point, Rogue). Brendan stars alongside Bruce Blain (Supernatural, Timeless), Loretta Walsh (When Calls the Heart, Bates Motel) and Crystal Lowe (Signed, Sealed, Delivered, A Little Bit Zombie) in this thriller. Rampage: President Down marks the final installment in the trilogy, and second sequel to the original cult classic, Rampage. The anticipated film will be released on Netflix in the US on December 12, 2016.

Writer and Director Uwe Boll, who has produced and directed over 37 feature films, calls Vancouver home.  Uwe’s body of work has continuously proven to be both controversial and diversely creative. Though he had a number of projects already under his belt, it wasn’t until 2003’s House of the Dead, based on the popular SEGA game franchise, that Uwe was brought to international attention as a prominent new figure in cult cinema.

rampagethree-145Uwe has worked with some of Hollywood’s top celebrities in blockbuster features. In 2005, he released two high-profile action-adventure titles: Bloodrayne, starring Sir Ben Kingsley (Gandhi) and Kristanna Loken (Terminator III) and Dungeon Siege: In The Name of the King, starring Jason Statham. 2009’s Darfur, a film following the Sudanese genocide, received critical claim and was lauded as a successful new direction for the director. Boll has made various movies about political subject matters, including: ‘Auschwitz and Tunnelrats, Attack on Darfur starring Kristanna Loken, David O’Hara and Billy Zane, and Assault on Wallstreet starring Dominic Purcell, Erin Karpluk, Edward Furlong and John Heard.

Born in Wermelskirchen, Germany, at only 10 years old Uwe was already filming short films on his Super 8. In 1995, he began working with Taunus Film Production GmbH as a producer and director. From here, Uwe’s film career truly took off. Uwe picked Vancouver as his new home for the long history of filming in the city. He first brought his productions to Vancouver in 1999 with his film Sanctimony, and since then Uwe went on to produce another 24 films in Vancouver and brought over 270 million EUR in film financing to the Vancouver economy.

bauhaus-kitchen-and-staff-0616It has been almost two years since Uwe Boll first announced that he was opening a restaurant in Vancouver, with Berlin based Michelin star chef Stefan Hartmann. His ambition behind the venture was to bring his favorite cuisine from Germany to his new home in Vancouver. After months of renovations to the historic Gastown building the Boulder Hotel, Bauhaus Restaurant celebrated its first anniversary in July 2016.

Choosing Vancouver to open his Bauhaus restaurant has also proven to be a success. Over the past year the restaurant has been winning over both critics and guests with its contemporary approach to German cuisine. Bauhaus offers two menus, the a la carte menu reflects a contemporary approach to German classic cuisine, while the seasonal tasting menu showcases modern European fare. The full six-course menu costs $99 while the a la carte dinner menu entrees cost $26-$54, with the priciest option being an organic beef tenderloin.

“Food does not have to be fancy to be good. I love good classic cuisine. One of my favorite things to cook at home is a great spaghetti bolognaise. I wanted to open a restaurant where I could enjoy the food I eat when I am filming movies overseas, but I couldn’t find in Vancouver. I’m a true foodie, I love to cook, and I love to eat. I don’t want to eat something that I feel I could cook at home.”

Uwe Boll invites Vancouver and tourists to come to Bauhaus and try the classical and contemporary cuisine by enjoying the flavors and richness from his homeland Germany.

Bauhaus is open daily from 5:00pm for dinner, and weekdays from 11:30am – 2:30pm for lunch.

Gastown’s anticipated Bauhaus Restaurant opens, bringing a new style of German cuisine to Vancouver

Chef Stefan HartmannGastown’s new Bauhaus Restaurant, led by celebrated chef Stefan Hartmann and owned by film director Uwe Boll, has finally opened this week after months of renovations.

Bauhaus Restaurant is named after the famous design movement from Germany, which seamlessly marries form and function. Many of the dining room elements were custom designed in the original Bauhaus style.

The restaurant is situated inside one of Vancouver’s unique historical buildings, also known as The Boulder Hotel, originally built in 1890. Over the last 100 years, the building has gone through many changes: from its early years as a saloon and bank to its most recent home to Boneta’s Restaurant.

The renovation was led by Vancouver designer Andrea Greenway. The goal of the design was to keep as much of the original structure as possible, an effort that included exposing the original 1890’s brick and marble, and uncovering the historical Bank Safe.

“It was a real challenge to keep the integrity of the building and incorporate our Bauhaus design concept. Modernist design can be a bit austere, so I hope that we have created a nice balance of modern and warm.” ~ Andrea Greenway

The restaurant aims to bring a new style of dining to Vancouver. The beautifully designed restaurant features both a dining room and a large lounge area. The menu incorporates both local and fresh seasonal ingredients and features a chef tasting menu, an à la carte menu, a German classics menu and a lunch menu.

Arctic Char

When people think about German cuisine they think Sausage, Schnitzel and Sauerkraut. Unlike its French neighbour, Germany has not historically been known for its haute cuisine. But a modern trend of revitalizing reliable staples, from poached veal tenderloin with polenta and peas to brioche dumpling and white asparagus soup, has ushered in the gastronomic age of neue deutsche Küche, or, New German Cuisine. According to an article by James Brennan (Fine Dining Lovers), Germany has become “one of the powerhouses of modern European gastronomy,” proven further by the impressive accolades awarded by the 2015 Michelin Guide: a whopping total of 281 starred restaurants.

Michelin star chefs, such as Bauhaus Restaurant’s own Stefan Hartmann, have been creating light, lean and local gastronomic delicacies by infusing contemporary flair into traditional favourites. And, lucky for us, Hartmann has brought the taste of Germany to Vancouver’s trendy Gastown district, where the communal spirit of neue deutsche Küche will likely resonate with British Colombia’s local food scene. Much like Canada, according to Food Republic writer Drew Lazor, Germany possesses “a storied agricultural backbone, including a strong citizen gardening tradition dictated by the communal cultivation of seasonal vegetables.”

But don’t be intimidated by chef Stefan Hartmann’s Michelin star title: prices at Bauhaus range from $20-40, and the 8 course chef tasting menu, priced at $110, is a real experience. The seasonal à la carte menu currently features: spot prawns with white asparagus, hollandaise and tarragon; halibut with caper crust, bean puree and lemon butter; goat cheese strudel, with white or green asparagus; and beef tenderloin with celery three ways.

The lunch menu, with prices between $14 and $27, features Arctic char, white asparagus soup, and German classics like beef roulade and wiener schnitzel.

“The good part about the long renovation is that it gave me more time to explore and sample ingredients from suppliers and farmers all over the lower mainland to ensure I have the best on my menu.” ~ Chef Stefan Hartmann

The Bauhaus Bar is led by award winning German bartender Florian Rupp, who recently won the Giffard Liqueurs Iron Bartender award. The signature cocktail menu features original German-inspired drinks like the Buttermilk Margarita (tequila, buttermilk, fresh lime, lemon, agave nectar, and quince jam) and the Ranglum (dark rum, wray, nephew overproof, fresh lime and falernum).

“We look forward to complementing Vancouver’s diverse restaurant scene with the first ever neue deutsche establishment in the city! There really is something on the menu for everyone.” ~ Uwe Boll.
