CBC TV Redemption Run docuseries streams on CBC Gem on January 23 and airs on February 1, at 7 p.m.

CBC TV’s ‘Redemption Run’ docuseries follows the Canadian Bobsleigh Team leading up to the 2026 Winter Olympics. The three-part series is available to stream on January 23, on CBC Gem and airs on CBC TV February 1, at 7 p.m. EST/PST (7:30 NT) in three back-to-back episodes.

Bobsleigh Canada is sliding into the Olympic year with the launch of Redemption Run. This emotional, adrenaline-charged, three-part documentary series brings audiences behind the curtain of the courageous rebuild of Canada’s National Bobsleigh Program as the nation’s fastest athletes on ice chase their Olympic dreams.  Redemption Run Trailer: https://vimeo.com/1140607559

Featuring many of Canada’s Olympic best and newcomers to the sport, the three-part series is available to stream beginning Friday, January 23, on CBC Gem and airs Sunday, February 1, at 7 p.m. (7:30 NT) in back-to-back episodes on CBC TV.  Set against dramatic locations and designed with escalating stakes, Redemption Run blends raw human storytelling with pulse-pounding competition.

Produced independently by Tyson Media, Redemption Run, with exclusive behind-the-scenes access, offers an intimate look at what it truly takes to become an Olympian. The crew shadowed athletes through training in Whistler and Calgary, accompanied them to World Cup events across Europe, and captured the dramatic conclusion at the World Championships in Lake Placid, New York. Much like the athletes’ journeys, the making of Redemption Run has been a story of rejection, perseverance, and eventual redemption.

“Redemption Run celebrates not only the extraordinary talent of our athletes but also the shared journey we’ve undertaken to rebuild a culture of respect, excellence, and purpose within Bobsleigh Canada,” said Kien Tran, chief executive officer of Bobsleigh Canada Skeleton.

“This project has actually been in development since the last Olympic cycle —almost four years ago,” says Tyson Hepburn, founder of Tyson Media. “The themes of sacrifice, resilience, and redemption are universal. And the level of access we had to the athletes was truly special.”

Rolling out on the heels of Canada revealing its 2026 Olympic Bobsleigh Team, the documentary comes to life with exclusive commentary, perspective and insight from head coaches and Olympic medallists, Justin Kripps and Lyndon Rush – both playing key roles in helping to lead the rebuild of the national bobsleigh program.

Tyson says. “But listening to these athletes’ stories—the personal sacrifices they make, often paying nearly $40,000 out of pocket just to compete—it inspired us. So we decided to take that same leap ourselves… In a massive way.”

A tight budget led to creative solutions, with long-time Tyson collaborators and industry veterans joining the project out of passion and patriotism. “Canadian patriotism is at an all-time high,” says Tyson. “The timing was right. Once the first episode was completed, the reaction was immediate. “We knew we had something special,” Tyson says. “The response was very positive.” It was the CBC team that stepped up with the commitment needed to bring the project to Canadian audiences. This marks the first collaboration between Tyson Media and CBC.

Redemption Run shines a spotlight on this bold, eclectic group of Canadian athletes — former pro football players, track stars, and hockey players — who come together to form an unlikely team while revealing the personal and collective journey in the chase to represent Canada on the world’s biggest stage as they set out to master one of the most punishing and electrifying sports in the Olympic program.

“Redemption Run isn’t just about bobsledding. It’s about the grind, the resilience, and the heart it takes to chase an Olympic dream,” said Tyson. “This series tells an authentic story of Canada’s bobsleigh athletes’ experiences over the past two years, capturing every push, every setback, and every milestone achieved. It’s fun, it’s fierce, and it’s emotional.”

Indigenous Actor Wayne Charles Baker Builds Powerful Screen Presence Across Film and Television

Indigenous actor Wayne Charles Baker continues to build a powerful on-screen presence through impactful roles in the feature films Capitaine and Villeneuve, as well as the television series Bon Cop, Bad Cop and HBO’s Stephen King’s IT: Welcome to Derry.

Wayne Charles Baker is an Indigenous Canadian actor from the Squamish Nation, celebrated for his powerful and authentic portrayals of First Nations stories on screen. Since the early 2000s, Wayne has built a distinguished career in film and television, bringing depth, strength, and cultural resonance to every role he takes on.

He stars in the upcoming feature film Capitaine, which will be released in Canada on January 16, 2026. He just wrapped a supporting role as Bob in the feature Villeneuve. Baker appears as recurring guest Gary Martin, alongside Henry Czerny, on Bon Cop Bad Cop, a Crave Original bilingual series featuring dialogue in both English and French, which will premiere in 2026. Wayne also appears in HBO’s Stephen King’s IT: Welcome to Derry as Chief John.

In the feature film Capitaine, Baker stars as Capitaine, a former gunner in the Canadian Navy and now an offshore fisherman, who hopes his daughter Mia will take over his business. He wants to protect her from the drugs and corruption seeping into the reserve from the nearby white village. When Mia reveals she wants to move to the city, Capitaine represses his anger, slipping into apathy as the memories of his time at residential school resurface. When he learns that Mia (McKenzie Deer Robinson) has left the reserve and is in danger, he immediately leaves the open sea and heads toward Montreal, hoping to find her. Filmed in Quebec, Capitaine is directed by William Mazzoleni Valin. (The use of the words: reserve and white; refers to the time period of the film.) Produced by Julie O’Bomsawin (Nation W8banaki) of Kassiwi Media, CAPTAIN is distributed in Canada by Entract Films.

IT: Welcome to Derry is an HBO TV series based on Stephen King’s novel, starring Jovan Adepo, Bill Skarsgard, and Taylour Paige.  In 1962, a couple with their son moved to Derry, Maine, just as a young boy disappeared. With their arrival, terrible things begin to happen in the town. IT: Welcome to Derry is a solid horror series that really nails atmosphere and suspense, with Pennywise as terrifying as ever and the adult performances bringing real depth. Baker plays Chief John in three episodes.

Baker’s filmography spans acclaimed productions such as Indian Horse, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, The Canyonlands, and Autumn and the Black Jaguar. On television, his standout performances include roles in Blackstone (as Chief Joe), NCIS, Arctic Air, Murdoch Mysteries, Supernatural, Unité 9, and Da Vinci’s City Hall.

Beyond acting, Baker is the host of Closer to Home on APTN, where he continues his mission to share stories that bridge cultures and celebrate Indigenous identity. Wayne is bilingual; he also speaks Mohawk, Salish, and Squamish, is an expert in Lacrosse, and is a professional fisherman. Through his artistry and advocacy, Wayne Charles Baker remains a compelling voice in North American cinema—one that uplifts, educates, and inspires. Wayne Charles Baker resides in Akwesasne, Quebec/New York.  He is available for interviews and photos on request.

World Premiere of Jennifer Chiu’s first feature documentary, Clan of the Painted Lady, at VIFF

World Premiere of Jennifer Chiu’s first feature documentary

at the Vancouver International Film Festival October 6 at 6:00 p.m. at Fifth Avenue Theatre and October 9 at 3:30 p.m. at VIFF Center

For Immediate Release: Vancouver, September 3, 2025:  Hakka-Canadian filmmaker Jennifer Chiu’s engrossing feature documentary, Clan of the Painted Lady, will have its World Premiere at the Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF) on October 6th and 9th.  In this personal film journey, director/producer Jennifer Chiu reaches into her family’s history to explore the Hakka — a people, a language, and a culture that have been obscured for far too long.

Tracing her own lineage back from Canada to China to Kolkata, India, the director creates an illuminating, bravely personal film. Through her own story, Jennifer explores the weight of parent-child separation, which migration often entails, and the loss and disconnection between generations that must somehow be healed. Thought to hail from the north of China, the Hakka settled in the southern part of the country, where they were known as the “guest people.” In the face of war, poverty and social marginalization, many of them dispersed to places such as Mauritius, India, Jamaica, and Canada — including BC’s Lower Mainland, where Chiu spent much of her childhood.

The director’s reach is as expansive as her people’s migratory spread: Using found Super 8 footage, she explores the Hakka’s history in India, and through candid, probing interviews with relatives and community leaders, she brings forth a search for belonging in a centuries-long story of migration.Chiu has made a warm and introspective film that is never weighed down by its explorations of family secrecy, the costs of assimilation, or the very uncertain future of Hakka culture.

Clan of the Painted Lady follows Jennifer’s personal journey from China to Canada to India, as she discovers why her family moved and how they keep their heritage alive while adapting to new places. With an ensemble of Hakka voices from around the world, the film explores how culture is transmitted from one generation to another, and the challenge of defining identity within a diaspora.

Clan of the Painted Lady is produced by Jennifer Chiu’s company, Amino Acid Technology, and commissioned by Knowledge Network, British Columbia’s public broadcaster and streaming service.

Jennifer Chiu is an award-winning writer, director, producer and documentary researcher living in Vancouver, British Columbia. Her dramatic feature INEDIA, and short films Memory of the Peace and CABBIE, have screened at festivals around the world, including DOK Leipzig, the Edinburgh Film Festival, Festival du Nouveau Cinéma, the Mill Valley Film Festival, and the Vancouver International Film Festival.  Clan of the Painted Lady is her first feature documentary.

Chiu’s production team includes Creative Producer Bradley Keeling, Consulting Producer Sarah Jane Flynn, Cinematographer Antonia Ramirez, Co-writer and Editor: Aynsley Baldwin and Co-Composers and Co-Sound Designers Scott Gailey and Oscar Vargas.

Clan of the Painted Lady is produced by Amino Acid Technology in association with Knowledge Network.  Developed and produced with the participation of The Canadian Media Fund, Creative BC and the Province of British Columbia Film Incentive BC. Produced with the Canadian Film or Video Production Tax Credit.  Developed with the financial participation of Telefilm Canada and the Bell Fund.

Jennifer Chiu is available for interviews upon request.

Vancouver Entrepreneur, Natalie Boll, Launches Tribela: A Digital Platform Reimagining Online Connection

Vancouver Entrepreneur Natalie Boll Launches Tribela: A Digital Platform Reimagining Online Connection. In a digital world shaped by infinite scrolls, algorithmic traps, and increasing mental health concerns, a new platform is challenging the industry to rethink what connection truly means.

Tribela, a purpose-driven digital media platform, launched its private beta this summer. Founded by Vancouver-based entrepreneur Natalie Boll and incubated through Oxford University Innovation, Tribela is designed to create a calmer, safer, and more intentional online experience.
“We set out to build a platform where people feel seen, not sold to,” said Boll. “Tribela is for those craving a healthier, more respectful way to engage online. One that values their time, their privacy, and their well-being.”

Boll’s decision to build Tribela was rooted in a profoundly personal experience. After stepping back from social media in 2018, she spent years examining how technology affects mental health, attention, and trust. That reflection ultimately inspired the development of a platform built around user autonomy and creative connection.

Unlike traditional social platforms focused on growth at all costs, Tribela is structured to reduce manipulation and maximize authenticity. The platform removes public like counts, autoplay, and algorithmic pressure. Users control what they see, who sees their content, and how they engage. Feeds are interest-based and designed to encourage meaningful expression.
Creators are invited to share long-form videos, voice notes, and articles. All posts are reviewed by an AI moderation system that has been trained since February on social media harms, ensuring safety without sacrificing freedom of expression.

The platform has already attracted attention from a new generation of creators, independent filmmakers, and educators looking for a digital space that supports deeper storytelling and thoughtful interaction.

An experienced team of women leaders joins Boll. Sakshi Chadha, formerly of Meta and Pinterest, brings expertise in platform growth and trust and safety. Rachel Bautista, who has held leadership roles at Meta and Visa, joins as advisor with a strong background in consumer product marketing.

Tribela’s private beta is now live in the UK, Canada, and the United States, with early adopters currently testing key features. The team is gradually onboarding waitlisted users ahead of a wider release later this year.

“We’re building something that people can believe in again,” said Boll. “This isn’t just another app. It’s a movement toward reclaiming our digital spaces for creativity, care, and connection.”
