‘3 Days In Havana’ starring Gil Bellows and Greg Wise opening in Cineplex Theatres across Canada on March 28th, 2014

The Promotion People - 3 Days in Havana

SOME PEOPLE WOULD KILL FOR THREE DAYS IN HAVANA

3 Days in Havana is the testament of a life-long collaboration between two friends and the directorial debut for both Gil Bellows and Tony Pantages

Gil Bellows and Tony Pantages are pleased to announce that the feature film ‘3 Days in Havana’ will open in Cineplex Theatres across Canada on March 28th, 2014 via leading Canadian distributor Entertainment One (eOne). 3 Days in Havana is the directorial debut of filmmakers, Gil Bellows & Tony Pantages and is the testament of a life-long collaboration between two friends with a shared vision and the talented family of artists and technicians that joined them on the ride.  The film stars Gil Bellows (Ally McBeal, Shawshank Redemption), Greg Wise (Sense and Sensibility), Robin Dunne (Sanctuary), Michael Eklund (The Call, True Justice), Christopher Heyerdahl (Hell on Wheels, True Blood) and John Cassini (Continuum, Blackstone)

About The Film
Jack Petty (Gil Bellows) gets more than he bargained for when he travels to Havana on business and gets caught up in an assassination conspiracy with his new friend Harry Smith (Greg Wise).

Jack Petty sits in an airport bar, nursing a drink. He’s on a stopover halfway to Havana, and so is the sexy lady who chats him up, giving him travel tips and whispering something scary in his ear. He’ll meet her again, in the midst of a conspiracy that includes assassination, kidnapping and more.

This a film with a lot of tradition behind it: some major Hitchcock (particularly Strangers on a Train and The 39 Steps); the wised-up dialogue of old film noir; and the gritty detail and sharp plot twists of contemporary thrillers. It’s all put across with high spirits, and the cast is stellar—highlights include Christopher Heyerdahl as a slick member of the Canadian Consulate, John Cassini as a ruthless mob boss, and Phyllida Law as… well, you’ll see. And there are many other colourful characters, none of them trustworthy, most of them with their sights set on poor Jack. He’ll have to outwit, outrun or outfight them all—a tall order for a mere businessman on a conference trip. But he’s surprisingly cool under pressure. The fun here comes not just from the close shaves and slick repartee but from the knowledge, quickly acquired, that nothing is what it seems. (Courtesy Vancouver International Film Festival)

Gemini Award-Winning Gabrielle Miller Makes Her Directorial Debut in Seed&Spark’s Newest Project ‘CLAUDETTE’

The Promotion People - Seed & Spark

Gabrielle Miller is set to direct a short film starring her Corner Gas co-star, Tara Spencer-Nairn and Toronto actor, Scott McCord. Currently in pre-production, the film will shoot for two days on December 7th and 8th 2013 in Toronto. Entitled, CLAUDETTE, the script is a murder mystery surrounding the disappearance of the title character’s husband.

Through the platform of Seed&Spark, the film will be produced primarily through donations. They will go forth in whatever manner they can based on their fundraising at that time, which will end a few days after they wrap. This gives viewers a unique opportunity to actually be a part of the outcome by contributing in real time in response to activity on set. Every donation increases their ability to make a better film, and the more they have going in, the more resources will be available on that day.

Find out more about the project and how you can support it at: seedandspark.com/studio/claudette

SYNOPSIS
After an early morning spent replanting her garden, Claudette wearily comes inside her home. It is autumn, the leaves are falling, it’s not the time for this type of yard work, but that does not concern her. She is too concerned with other things.

Once in doors, Claudette removes her gum boots and places them just inside her kitchen next to a muddy shovel. She climbs the stairs, removes her clothes and showers. Claudette towels off. Claudette gets dressed. Claudette quietly and meticulously packs her bags.

Later, in her kitchen, Claudette lights a kettle for tea on the stove, one last cup before– there is a tapping at the back door, a knocking rather. Claudette goes to it.

It is Detective Koslovski. The Detective assigned to her husband’s case. He had been coming around a lot, but not for the last few weeks. She had wondered about that… she wonders why he was back here now. On today of all days.

Koslovski admires her garden. Claudette agrees to allow him to come inside once he tells her that some ‘news’ has come to light.

In her living room she sits with Koslovski as he explains that the people that her husband owed money to are not the type of people that one would necessarily want to owe money to.

Claudette lets this information bounce off of her shoulders as casually as she can, declaring it was not she but her husband, Jeremiah, who owed the money. Claudette’s evasiveness leads Koslovski to call out the elephant in the room. He states aloud that it is most likely that her husband has absconded leaving his troubles for her to deal with.

The tea kettle in the kitchen whistles. Claudette asks if Koslovski would like some tea and begins to wonder just what exactly Koslovski is here to ask her…

A Tribute to Cory Monteith

The Promotion People - Cory Monteith

Our hearts go out to Cory Monteith’s family and friends.

We were lucky enough to work with Cory as his publicist from 2007 to 2009, while he was on his road to “Glee”.

Cory is one of the nicest people that anyone could ever meet. The last time we saw Cory from a far was with Richard Branson in Vancouver at a Board of Trade Luncheon. Of all people in the world, Richard Branson chose Cory to be his Virgin Unite Ambassador. Cory also supports Project Limelight for homeless youth in Vancouver to give them the chance to discover their strengths and potential through the arts.

Cory was a talent of course, but also a caring, lovely man who will be greatly missed. He had love and respect from everyone who knew him. Our hearts go out to his family, friends and Lea Michele. Cory was blessed with his long time agent Elena Kirschner, who guided Cory’s career from the beginning. We know how much they care for each other.

From the first time we meet Cory, we knew that he had a very successful career as an actor ahead of him. We were with Cory when he walked his very first Red Carpet at the Vancouver International Film Festival. It turned out to be the first of many. After an interview with the Biography Channel early on in his career, the reporter told us that Cory was one of the most amazing interviews that she had ever experienced. He was so honest about his struggles to succeed.

Cory drove to Los Angeles to audition for “Glee”. He had to pull into roadside rest stations to conduct press interviews along the way. We were so excited when Cory called to tell us that he had booked his role as Finn Hudson on the new Fox hit series.

The Promotion People - Cory Monteith - Brothers & Sisters

Cory has had a US publicist since the explosion in popularity of “Glee”, so we were thrilled when we could work with him again at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival, while promoting Carl Bessai’s Feature Film “Sisters & Brothers”, with co-stars Dustin Milligan, Amanda Crew, Gabrielle Miller, Ben Ratner, Gabrielle Rose, Camille Sullivan, Tom Scholte, Jay Brazeau, Kacey Rohl, Ali Liebert, Monica Delain and Beatrice King; all past/present clients. It was a very special time and Cory was genuinely happy to see me and gave me a huge hug. One I will always remember.

We join Cory’s family, friends, the cast of ”Glee”, actors, media and millions of fans everywhere when we say:

“Cory you will be missed. You left us all far too soon.”

Vancouver Writer/Director Jesse James Miller Releases Two Award-Winning Films Internationally

The Promotion People Jesse James Miller

Award-winning Vancouver Writer/Director Jesse James Miller’s hard work is paying off with two award- winning features being released internationally at the same time. Jesse has been labouring at his craft under the radar for 15 years. He has been writing and directing numerous independent films until, as the dedicated filmmaker says, finally got “his movie” made and a “major documentary produced back to back with no break, which is a very rare feet for any film maker.”

“The Good Son” is the passionate story that follows the life of Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini. The film is already starting to get early Oscar 2014 consideration, and recently signed a distribution deal with Snag Films for a theatrical release in the U.S. later this summer. His other film, “Becoming Redwood” is also a passion project, as it is based on Jesse’s childhood. The film will be released in theatres across Canada on April 12th. Both films have proved to be festival gems, and have won multiple film festival awards where they have screened.

Both filmed in 2011, Jesse finished the principal photography on “The Good Son”, and promptly flew home to Vancouver to start casting “Becoming Redwood” the next day. He went back and forth editing both films until they were both completed in the spring of 2012.

As a director, Jesse poses determination, resilience and passion, qualities that transpire into his work behind the camera. Coming from a family immersed in the arts, as a child, Jesse was in tune with his creative genes and began writing plays, scripts, songs and poems. Writing was a creative outlet for Jesse that fed his imaginative mind, yet he knew that before he could direct his own film, he would need to learn the ins and outs of the film industry.

The Feature Documentary “The Good Son: The life of Ray ‘Boom Boom’ Mancini” recently premiered at an exclusive viewing in Hollywood in March. This invite only, sold out event had a guest list that included Hollywood elite James Caan, Robin Wright, Mickey Roarke, Ed O’Neil, boxer legend Sugar Ray Leonard, UFC legends Bas Rutten, Rorion Gracie, and current UFC fighter Brendan Schaub in attendance. Ray Mancini was the special guest and presenter of the screening.

“The Good Son” follows Ray Mancini, son of the original Boom Boom lightweight contender Lenny Mancini. A national icon in the sport of boxing Ray competes to represent middle class America, but most of all, fights to conquer his father’s unfinished business. Lenny’s dreams ended on a battlefield, when fragments from a German mortar shell nearly killed him. Almost four decades later, Ray promises to win the title his father failed to achieve. “The Good Son” focuses on real life perspectives and accounts, detailing the highs and lows of Ray’s boxing career. The documentary discusses a match in 1982 against obscure Korean challenger, Deuk Koo Kim that would alter Ray’s path in life forever. Challenger Deuk Koo Kim never regained consciousness after the fourteenth round and passed away days after the match. Three months later, Deuk’s despondent mother took her own life. These deaths have not only haunted Ray but also tainted his image as an all American boxer.

“The Good Son” uncovers the dimensions of Mancini’s ill-fated career, tracking the Mancini and Kim families across generations and excavating mysteries—from the killing of Mancini’s brother to the fate of Kim’s son. Even as the scenes move from Youngstown to New York, Las Vegas to Seoul, Reno to Hollywood, “The Good Son” remains an intimate history; a saga of fathers and fighters, loss and redemption.

Becoming Redwood
The Promotion People Becoming Redwood

“Becoming Redwood” is partially based on Jesse’s life, and stars Ryan Grantham, Jennifer Copping, Scott Hylands, Derek Hamilton and Chad Willett. Jesse wrote the script in 1998, but it was several years before Jesse considered the script ready.

Set in 1969, “Becoming Redwood” follows the life of Redwood Forest Hanson, who at the age of 2, witnesses his family disintegrate as his mother leaves his father for a new life. At the very moment his mother walks away, Redwood, aided with the background radio news of another Jack Nicklaus victory, has the beginning of a stress induced epiphany: Beat Jack Nicklaus, the world’s greatest golfer, and his family will be back together. This bittersweet film focuses on Redwood`s longing to triumph over the adversities of everyday life. With no easy solutions in this coming-of-age comedy, a sense of hope still prevails for Redwood: a hope for love, a hope for the future, and for a sense of amity in the unsympathetic wheel of life.

Jesse along, with his wife and lead Jennifer Copping, and star Ryan Grantham will be in attendance on April 12-13. He also directed the feature film “The Seamstress” (Lance Hendriksen), helmed the pilot presentation piece “Captain Starship” (Paul McGillion) and is currently directing commercials for Lancaster Vintage (featuring Snoop Dogg, Mike Tyson, Muhammad Ali and Bruce Lee).
