CANDiLAND is based on the novel by Elizabeth Engstrom and will be distributed in North America by IndustryWorks Pictures spring 2016.

“It is an extreme honor and privilege to be awarded this distinction. This is really a reflection of all the hard work of the crew, cast, and everyone who supported this great film.  I am eternally in debt to my co-leads Gary Busey and Chelah Horsdal who were an inspiration everyday and will no doubt be recognized for their outstanding performances in this film. As well as to the magnetic Elizabeth Engstrom, and of course, our inventive and extraordinary leader, writer/Editor/Director Rusty Nixon.” says James Clayton.

Clayton began his acting career at the age of sixteen when he booked his first role in K19: The Widowmaker (2001), starring Harrison Ford and directed by Kathryn Bigelow. In 2004, James went on to a supporting lead role in the Horror feature Adam and Evil followed by a leading role in the Thriller feature The Bentley Box (2004) and honed his comedic skills while leading in the head-banger Comedy, Blackbridge (2006). On television, James has appeared on the hit CW series Supernatural (2009), Fox’s Fringe (2011), and has appeared as leading roles in multiple commercial campaigns for clients such as Reebok, Suddenlink, Kia, and Telus.

Dejan Loyola adds the role of Dr.Dev Sekara on CTV’s “Saving Hope”

Screen Shot 2015-11-20 at 7.26.47 AMDejan Loyola’s role on CTV’s “Saving Hope” as Dr. Dev Sekara is close to home.  Dr. Dev is an eager first year surgical resident at Hope Zion Hospital. He uses humour to try and diffuse his anxiety of being one of the hospital’s bright young doctors. Dev is the extremely compassionate albeit naive love interest of Dr. Cassie Williams (Kim Shaw). “Saving Hope” airs Thursday nights at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on CTV.

“Saving Hope” has a special personal meaning to Dejan as he is the son of two former psychiatric nurses and is a former mental health care worker himself. Because Dejan has been surrounded by the medical world from an early age, the role of Dr. Dev Sekara is a perfect fit.

Dev definitely has aspects of both my parents in him, it has been really cool to incorporate my personal experience.” Dejan says, “Both my parents are former psychiatric nurses and I was a mental health care worker myself for a number of years. Coming from a family of medical professionals it has been an incredible experience being able to portray a young doctor.”

Dejan Loyola’s television debut was on the pilot episode of the science-fiction themed “V”, with following work in the 2010 fantasy film “Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief”, guest roles on a number of TV series that include “Tower Prep”, “Fringe”, “Emily Owens M.D.” and “The Tomorrow People”, as well as appearances in the television movies “Best Player” and “Grave Halloween”. Dejan plays comedic relief in the Nickelodeon films: “Best Player” and “One Crazy Cruise”. Dejan was one of the series leads in the CW pilot “H.M.S.: White Coat” and also had a supporting lead role in the independent feature “Evangeline”, which was nominated for nine Leo Award’s in 2014.

SH4_EP405_D2_SW_0025Dejan’s work is showcased through a multitude of diverse roles. In “Best Player”, Dejan plays The Eviscer8r, a villainous and ridiculous professional video game player. In “Grave Halloween”, his lead role as Terry, an American exchange student studying film in Japan, is a joker, caring, and a bit nerdy but also brave when the chips are down. On the other side of the spectrum, Dejan played Rafi, a genie and brother of the male lead, Cyrus, on “Once Upon A Time in Wonderland”.

A highlight moment to Dejan’s career was the opportunity to chat and work alongside Tom Cruise even though it was just for a day doing stunts driving a scooter for “Mission Impossible 4”.

When time permits, Dejan returns to his old school on Salt Spring Island to teach improv and theatre. His early days in writing, directing and acting in theatre resulted in scholarships and bursaries that allowed him to start training.

Dejan lived in his father’s homeland of Sri Lanka for a couple of years during the civil war and was primarily home schooled due to the country’s hardships. He returned to Canada with his family when he was at the age of 7 and enrolled in acting classes at a community theatre where his first connection to other youths were made. Attending public school for the first time at the age of 12 was a struggle but he used comedy to make people laugh, connect with people, and make new friends. This journey taught him the power of connecting with others through smile and laughter, developing an even deeper love for stage and screen work.

Dejan grew up on Salt Spring Island and resides in Toronto while filming the TV series “Saving Hope” over six months, but his home is in Vancouver.

Dejan is available for interviews upon request.

AUDIENCE CHOICE AWARD FOR BEST DOCUMENTARY AT
17TH ANNUAL ARPA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

3

Hannah: Buddhism’s Untold Journey—the award-winning documentary by co-director/producers Marta György Kessler and Adam Penny which chronicles Hannah Nydahl’s story of bringing Tibetan Buddhism to the West—makes its Vancouver debut at VIFF (Vancouver International Film Festival) on September 24th and 26th. The film was edited by Sundance Grand Jury Prize and Emmy award-winner Simon Barker. Hannah recently made its New York City debut at The Rubin Museum of Art.

Watch the official trailer via Vimeo HERE. Tickets are available at www.viff.org

Filmed in India, Nepal, the Far East and Europe, Hannah is the untold true-story of a young Danish woman’s life, searching for greater levels of perception in the 1960s until as an adult, she becomes a pillar of living Buddhism with her husband Ole Nydahl. In 1968, the two were the first Western students of His Holiness the 16th Karmapa in Nepal. After a period of study, they were sent back to Europe where they made his teachings of Tibetan Buddhism relevant for Western minds. Over the following 3 decades they travelled throughout the world bringing the teachings to all walks of life. “Hannah is not just a story about an exceptional and brave woman,” says co director/producer Marta György Kessler, who spent 15 years traveling with Nydahl and some of the most renowned Buddhist Lamas. “It’s an adventure of historical significance with such a profound, rich narrative, it was important that we not just tell the story—but also really touch people with it.”

h11In 2006 Hannah was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. She and Ole returned to Copenhagen to live out her last days together in the center they founded in 1974. Almost exactly three months after the diagnosis, Hannah passed away whilst in meditation with her husband and a few friends around her. On June 13, 2015 Hannah and Lama Ole Nydahl received the award for dialogue, coexistence and peace of the UNESCO Association for Intercultural and Interreligious Dialogue. As another award winner, the Association honored Pope Francis I.

So, You Want To Work In Promotion and Publicity?

Like most promotion agencies, we receive several speculative CVs every week. If you’re thinking of sending in your CV or are looking for some advice on how to break into the promotion and publicity industry then here are some important hints and tips:

Be Prepared to Work Hard

Many young people choose publicity and promotion as their chosen career path without any real idea about what the industry or the profession entails. The entertainment industry has a reputation for being glamorous and exciting, and for many this is an attractive prospect. For the most part this is true, and working for and on behalf of some of the most important and influential talent in the business is an incredible way to spend your working career. However the entertainment business is still just that: a business. Its hard work and many aspects of the industry are completely devoid of the glamor that those entering the industry without any real experience initially expect. Perseverance, hard work, and dedication will all help you to get your foot into the door of the right agency: don’t underestimate the importance of undertaking a work experience placement if there aren’t any full time jobs available. Hard work never goes unnoticed and by proving yourself to be competent, dedicated and able to undertake whatever job is thrown at you, you’ll soon rise to the top of the pile when a permanent position does arise.

Focus on Your Skills

Ensure that you constantly focus on promoting your core skills, and ensure that you develop those skills that will best suit the career you want to undertake. If you want to work in promotions and publicity then a post graduate degree in rocket science is unlikely to be of much use, but that crash course in PR is likely to look great on your CV and boost your skill base too. Know what your main skills are, and understand what skills your interviewer or boss are likely to be looking for. You can then focus on developing these skills whilst learning as much as possible from those more experienced team members around you.

Let Your Head Rule Your Heart

Although you may be tempted to choose to start out your career working for the agency that represents your favourite star, there are much more important things to consider: these are the same factors you should consider before you accept a job role in any field. Job security is a powerful and reassuring thing, and not something offered to every new graduate, so a role that comes with a long term contract should certainly be considered. Other essential perks such as the health protection afforded by a corporate health insurance policy and a pension plan are also vital considerations, and should certainly hold sway when choosing where to work, if you are presented with more than one option. When you’re just starting your career, perks such as health insurance policies and health insurance plans often seem unimportant or irrelevant to your current lifestyle, however in the long term you will find that your life is very uncomfortable without them so it is certainly something to plan ahead for and consider.

Tailor Your CV

Finally, in order to get that interview, be invited for that work experience placement, or otherwise get your foot in the door, you need to make yourself stand out. Your first tool for doing this is your CV. The best applicants tailor their CV for every single job they apply for and personalise their cover letter so that is resonates with the company that you are hoping to work for. It may be more time consuming, but doing a little research and addressing your CV to the HR Manager by name, rather than simply addressing it ‘For the attention of the HR manager’ will immediately capture the attention of the individual you are addressing and guarantee that your CV will be read. Ensure that the content is just as punchy and attention grabbing, and you will stand a much better chance of getting an interview and being able to talk your way into the job of your dreams in a face to face situation.

Vancouver filmmaker Matthew Campbell vies for CineCoup’s Million Dollar Prize with his feature film “The Wounded” starring Patrick Sabongui

The Promotion PeopleFilm follows Afghani father’s trek to Canada to find revenge against the man who killed his son

Filmmaker Matthew Campbell has submitted his action-packed thriller, The Wounded to the social media platform CineCoup, answering their call for indie filmmakers to post trailers of their projects and navigate their way through the selection process. The final five films (voted by fans) will be optioned for development. Among those five is the $1 million prizewinner.

The Wounded is a story of two fathers. The emotional thriller focuses on Naseer (Patrick Sabongui) an average working-class man from Afghanistan who travels to Canada to seek revenge on the Marine (Rob Hayter) responsible for his son’s death. Meanwhile, Patrick (the marine) is grappling with the effects of war on his mental health while desperately trying to patch things up with his own family upon his return. When Naseer puts a plan into motion hoping for justice, both fathers are pushed to the unthinkable as they come to terms with the effects of violence in their lives.

“Think of the classic American ‘my family is dead, now I will avenge them’ flick, a.k.a. Collateral Damage,” Campbell explains. “But put the twist on a normal Afghani, middle class father who has never willed ill upon anyone, who decides to make the trek to North America to find the man who killed his son believing this will bring him peace.”

For The Wounded, Matthew pulled together a great cast to join Patrick Sabongui (The Flash, Godzilla, 300) who plays Naseer, the Afghan father who wants revenge for Patrick the soldier who killed his son played by Rob Hayter (Falling Skies, The 100). Paula Giroday (Once Upon a Time, Psych) who plays the mother and Madison Guppy (Fringe, Jake and Jasper) plays the daughter. Sasha Proctor (Underworld: Awakening, Arrow) is the Director of Photography and Leif Haydale (The Interview, White House Down) coordinated the stunts.

Over the last eight years, Matthew Campbell has worked on some of Vancouver’s most buzzed-about projects – including hit shows like Arrow, Godzilla, and the upcoming Disney flick Tomorrowland starring George Clooney. Now the young director is gearing up to helm his very first feature, The Wounded, with the potential help of a $1 million prize.

Voting for the Top 60 opens April 6 and runs for the following four days. Campbell hopes to make it all the way to the Top 5. The Wounded trailer has garnered seven pages worth of comments on the movie’s CineCoup page – most of which are overwhelmingly positive. One user wrote it was an “action-packed teaser with great stunts!” Another commented: “Great action and editing, looks like strong acting as well. I’ll be following this one!”

Campbell has been hard at work on this project for more than a year. He’s personally invested nearly $35,000 into the film and received an amazing amount of help from friends in the industry. Next up is a longer ‘investor’s trailer’ featuring visual effects from ILM, the Oscar-winning studio that’s worked on blockbusters such as Star Wars and Transformers.
