Actor Patti Kim joins the cast of the popular sci-fi drama The Expanse
Patti Kim appears as the leader of a Belter settlement when season four of the series hits Amazon Prime Video December 13, 2019
Actress Patti Kim had set a goal of being cast in a sci-fi show because of the dynamic, inclusive stories but also for the dedicated, knowledgeable fan base. She couldn’t believe her luck when, on her birthday, she found out she landed the role of Carol Chiewewe in the Amazon Prime Video sci-fi series The Expanse, which begins airing its fourth season on December 13, 2019.
The Expanse is an American science fiction television series developed by Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, based on The Expanse novels by James S. A. Corey. The series is set in a future where humanity has colonized the solar system and follows a disparate band of antiheroes – United Nations Security Council member Chrisjen Avasarala (Shohreh Aghdashloo), police detective Josephus Miller (Thomas Jane), ship’s officer James Holden (Steven Strait) and his crew – as they unwittingly unravel and place themselves at the center of a conspiracy which threatens the system’s fragile state of Cold War-like peace, the class balance, and the survival of humanity.
Critics have praised the show for its visuals, character development, and political narrative. It received a Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation and three Saturn Award nominations for Best Science Fiction Television Series.
Alcon Entertainment produces and finances the series. It sold three seasons to Syfy, which canceled the series in May 2018. After a passionate fan campaign launched to save the show (which included a petition, crowdfunding, and a #SaveTheExpanse banner flown outside of Amazon’s HQ), it turned out Jeff Bezos was a fan and he announced that the show would be saved by Amazon for season four. Amazon Prime Video picked up the fourth season, with all ten episodes set to be released on December 13, 2019. On July 27, Amazon renewed The Expanse for a fifth season.
Patti plays character Carol Chiwewe, the leader of a Belter settlement beyond the ring gates who is doing her best to keep order amongst various groups that have landed on Ilus. She is strong-willed, fiercely loyal and wants to ensure that the colony her people have established is maintained, as they have nowhere else to go.
The Expanse is based on a popular series of books by two authors written under the pen name James S.A. Corey (Ty Franck & Daniel Abraham). Fun Fact: Ty Franck is a former assistant to George R.R. Martin (famed Game of Thrones author) and some people say that The Expanse is a space opera likened to a Game of Thrones in space.
Patti also cherishes her role as Sheriff Yolanda Harjo on season one of Sacred Lies streaming on Facebook Watch. With mysterious happenings in small-town Montana Sheriff Yolanda Harjo is on the case to figure out what’s going on. There’s been a fire in the forest where a cult once lived, dead bodies have been found and a handless young girl who doesn’t have much to say. Season two comes out February 2020 with the story taking us on a new adventure based on a Brother’s Grimm fairytale.
Patti has appeared on several notable television series’ in the past, including as Roberta Drays on the first two seasons of the award-winning AMC series The Killing. In her career thus far, Patti is grateful for the opportunities she has had to work with talented, powerhouse women such as Veena Sud (The Killing, Seven Seconds), Nicole Kassel (The Killing, Claws, Watchmen), Raelle Tucker (Sacred Lies, True Blood), Mireille Enos (The Killing, Good Omens), Jenny Klein (Jessica Jones, The Witcher). She celebrates the shift to more women at the helm of projects and feels the industry is benefiting greatly because of it.
Patti’s background is Caucasian and Korean and enjoys the challenge of bringing her diverse background to playing varied roles and bringing visibility to minority characters. Patti is active in the labour and social justice movement with a strong interest in women’s issues.
Patti grew up in Calgary, AB, Canada and now calls Vancouver, BC home.
